TIMANI WORKSHOPS:
BREATHING FOR WINDS & SINGERS
DATE: 23rd MARCH - 5th APRIL, 2020
TIME: TBA
TEACHER: CHRISTINE ELIZABETH CLANCY
Access to controlled breath is necessary to play a wind instrument or sing, so most musicians receive some kind of instruction on breath and support during their education. This well-intentioned advice is too often based on intuited experience or inaccurate anatomy. For many, this can lead to misinterpretation and in turn confusion, reduced sound quality, injury, and/or unnecessary stress. This workshop combines knowledge of the relevant anatomy with musician-specific exercises to help musicians perform more optimally with more freedom.
This 3 hour workshop includes:
- What anatomical structures are involved in breathing and support, and how they are relevant for musicians.
- Different types of breathing patterns or coordinations as well as their advantages/disadvantages in relation to making music.
- How the rest of the body can support the coordination of optimal breathing and support and why relaxing is not necessarily the best thing for musicians.
- Exercises to activate muscles supporting optimal breath or deactivate compensatory muscles that inhibit it, as well as the opportunity to observe the effects of these exercises on performance.
