On this workshop you will learn how to sit in order to experience more security and freedom when you play an instrument or sing.

What does it mean to have a good posture? When we sit, the pelvis is the foundation on which the rest of the body balances. How we use the pelvis will therefore affect the functionality of the upper body, the shoulders, the arms and the fingers.

There are many myths regarding good posture. We often get told to sit straight, feel heavy and sit relaxed, without really knowing how or why.

This workshop will give you a better understanding of how you can sit in a way that gives you the best conditions to play an instrument or sing.

During this four hour-workshop you will learn:

  • Which muscles should be active and which should relax in order to have a solid foundation
  • How you can sit to get more freedom and precision in your music making, better sound and feel more secure on stage
  • How the breath is affected by how you sit
  • How the way you sit can prevent/ease pain in the back, neck, shoulders and arms

2. Shoulders & Neck

Most musicians have experienced tension or even pain in their neck, shoulders and arms. We often get told to relax our shoulders. But what is it exactly that we are supposed to relax? There are about 25 different muscles attaching to the shoulder (shoulder= shoulder blade, collar bone and shoulder joint). At least nine of these needs to be active in order for us to play/sing freely. Why then, are we only told to relax? And what muscles do we need to activate in order to stay pain free?

This, and much more, you will learn on tonight’s workshop.

During this four hour-workshop you will learn:

  • How the muscles in the shoulders affect your sound
  • How the muscles in the shoulders affect your breathing
  • Exercises to enhance the coordination in shoulders and neck, which can lead to a fuller sound, more control and greater virtuosity
  • How the rest of the body can help relieve the shoulders and neck
  • Why the position of the shoulder blade is crucial for having free arm movements

3. Support & Breathing

19th April 17.30-21.30

Price: SEK 600/450(student),

There are many methods concerning breathing, and you will find as many techniques and systems describing well-functioning breathing as you will find methods. Interestingly enough, however, almost all of them aim for the same experience of optimal breathing. Words like free, natural, effortless, expanding, relaxed, supported and deep are all part of a jargon shared by most of the ”schools” and methods within breathing pedagogy attempting to describe optimal breathing. So then the question is: why on earth is it so difficult to attain? Why is something that is natural difficult to gain?

During this workshop you will learn breathing and support from an anatomical perspective. What is actually happening when you inhale? Which muscles are responsible and how does it affect the rest of the body? You will also get to hear and try out what support and well-functioning breathing can do for your phrasing, sound and technique, during an informal master class.

During this four hour-workshop you will learn:

  • Four types of breathing and which one is the most beneficial for music making
  • Exercises to help you access stability and free breathing
  • How abdominal activity can enhance freedom in your arms
  • How one muscle can help you get richer sound and greater virtuosity
